Periodontitis is a gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth. It can cause tooth loss and increase non-oral complications such as raise the risk of heart attack and other serious health problems.

Periodontitis is usually preceded by chronic gingival bacterial infection known as gingivitis which is the result of poor oral hygiene as such, periodontitis is largely preventable. Brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and getting regular dental checkups can greatly reduce your chance of developing periodontitis. When brushing is not done at regular intervals, bacteria will accumulate and promote the formation of dental plaque and eventually progress to tartar that would then require removal by professional cleaning.

Treatment goals consist of removal of tartar formation, deep gingival pocket cleaning, and reduction of periodontal pockets. These interventions can be avoided if regular oral hygiene is maintained.

Deep gingival pocket cleaning is a very painful procedure that requires local anesthesia and can cause significant gum bleeding.

In our clinics, the deep pocket cleaning is done by a photothermal therapy using the diode laser and an innovative product: EmunDo

EmunDo is a bio compatible colorant stimulated through the diode laser irradiation and has a germicidal effect in deep pockets. It’s only operational on inflamed tissue, killing effectively all gram positive and negative bacteria.

Compared to classical treatment, laser deep pocket cleaning is painless to the degree of not requiring local anesthesia, has minimal gum bleeding, less operative time, and has faster post interventional healing time. The reduction of gum bleeding and the germ killing effect of EmunDo therapy also minimize bacterial translocation from the oral cavity to the blood stream reducing transient bacteremia which ultimately decreases cardiovascular incidents.
