The diagnosis of oral pathology must include:

- Medical history: the patient must be asked if his parents or his relatives had/have the same kind of lesion
- Clinical examination: if the clinical examination reveals any specific lesion, the patient should be asked about the symptoms, the time of appearance and if he had any related symptoms outside the oral cavity.
